Fosi Audio ZA3 Data Dossier: Power Ratings, 32V vs 48V, Stereo vs Mono and FAQs

The Real FAQ: The Fosi Audio ZA3 is a compact Class-D power amplifier, but the useful questions start where the sales copy stops: Which power supply should you buy? Can it run your speakers and subwoofer? What does mono mode actually change? Can you connect a turntable, TV, streamer, or computer? What extra gear do you still need?

This page uses Fosi’s current product information and user instructions to answer those practical questions without making you read the whole manual.

Plain-English Snapshot

  • 32V vs 48V power supply: The supply changes the amplifier’s available input power substantially. A 32V/5A supply tops out at 160W of DC input, while a 48V/5A supply tops out at 240W before amplifier losses.
  • Headline wattage needs context: Fosi publishes several different ZA3 output figures. They should be read with the test conditions and power supply rather than treated as interchangeable continuous-output promises.
  • 2–8 ohm speaker support: The ZA3 can be used across that published impedance range, but output power is not the same at every impedance.
  • Stereo / mono mode: Two ZA3 units can be used as monoblocks, but mono mode does not simply double the stereo power rating.
  • Active subwoofer output: The ZA3 can send signal to a powered subwoofer. It does not provide a separate amplified channel for a passive subwoofer.
  • No Bluetooth or tone controls: Its published inputs are wired RCA and balanced XLR/TRS, and the comparison data does not list bass or treble controls.

In short: the ZA3 is less about one giant watt number and more about how power supply, speaker impedance, operating mode, and source connections interact.

The Most Interesting Part: Fosi Publishes More Than One Power Number

Fosi’s current ZA3 product page states 180W × 2 at 4 ohms in its specification block, while its current ZA3 user-instruction page states 155W × 2 at 4 ohms with a 48V/5A supply. The same product page also uses “up to 155W” in its descriptive text, while a comparison table elsewhere on the page says “MAX Power Output 2 × 300W @ 4Ω.”

Those numbers are not interchangeable. They may reflect different test methods, distortion thresholds, chip capability, burst conditions, or marketing conventions. DDB does not collapse them into one pretend-certain number.

The Power-Supply Ceiling Helps Explain the Confusion

A 48V × 5A power supply can provide at most 240 watts of DC input power before amplifier losses. A 32V × 5A supply can provide at most 160 watts.

That means a claim such as 180 watts per channel into two channels cannot describe 360 watts of continuous simultaneous output from a 240-watt power supply. The supply itself makes that physically impossible. Published amplifier wattage therefore has to be read together with the test conditions and power source.

The Real FAQ: Questions Buyers and Owners Actually Ask

Can the ZA3 really produce 180 watts per channel continuously?

Not simultaneously into both channels from a 48V/5A supply. The supply can deliver only 240W before conversion losses. Treat Fosi’s higher per-channel figures as test-condition output ratings rather than a continuous two-channel wall-power promise.

Why does Fosi list both 155W × 2 and 180W × 2?

Its current official pages use both figures. The manufacturer does not clearly reconcile the difference in the material we found, so DDB leaves the discrepancy visible.

What changes with the 32V power supply?

Fosi’s user instruction lists 95W × 2 stereo and 110W mono at 4 ohms with the 32V/5A supply. The lower voltage also lowers the supply’s DC input ceiling from 240W to 160W.

Can I run 4-ohm speakers?

Yes. Fosi specifies support for 2–8 ohm speakers and publishes its headline output figures at 4 ohms.

Can I run 8-ohm speakers?

Yes, within the published 2–8 ohm compatibility range. Output power will not be the same as the 4-ohm ratings.

Can one ZA3 power a subwoofer?

It has an active subwoofer output, intended to send signal to a powered subwoofer. It is not a passive-subwoofer power channel.

Does the ZA3 have Bluetooth?

No Bluetooth input is listed. Its published inputs are RCA and balanced XLR/1/4-inch TRS.

Does it have tone controls?

No. Fosi’s comparison table lists no bass or treble controls for the ZA3.

Can I use two ZA3 amplifiers as monoblocks?

Yes. Mono mode is a core feature, and Fosi explicitly describes pairing two ZA3 units for a stereo system.

Does mono mode double the power?

No. Fosi’s own 48V/5A user-instruction ratings are 155W per channel in stereo and 235W in mono, not 310W or 360W in mono.

How small is it?

Roughly 6.1 × 7.24 × 2 inches, based on Fosi’s metric dimensions.

Can I use XLR cables?

Yes. The balanced input supports XLR and 1/4-inch TRS connections.

What does the 12V trigger do?

It allows compatible equipment to synchronize power on/off rather than requiring the ZA3 to be switched separately.

Using the Fosi ZA3 12V Trigger with WiiM Pro, Pro Plus, or Ultra

Direct answer: A WiiM Pro, Pro Plus, or Ultra can provide the 12V trigger signal used by the Fosi ZA3, but some amplifier/trigger combinations may not respond with a normally seated cable. WiiM’s current support guide recommends testing a half-inserted amplifier-side plug or using a stereo-to-mono adapter plus a mono cable. Pro and Pro Plus use a 2.5 mm Trigger Out; Ultra uses 3.5 mm.

Which WiiM trigger connector do you have?

  • WiiM Pro: 2.5 mm Trigger Out.
  • WiiM Pro Plus: 2.5 mm Trigger Out.
  • WiiM Ultra: 3.5 mm Trigger Out.

WiiM’s trigger guide says its supported trigger connectors can be mono TS or stereo TRS. The ZA3 side is simpler in function: Fosi confirms that it is a 12V Trigger In used to synchronize power with another device. Fosi’s current text documentation does not specify the ZA3 trigger pin/contact mapping, so DDB would not buy a cable solely from an unverified pinout claim.

Why can a WiiM-to-ZA3 trigger cable fail?

WiiM says some amplifiers may not power on or respond as expected when connected to Trigger Out. That matches older owner reports involving the ZA3. The important point is practical: the problem can be the way the trigger contacts line up, not proof that either device is broken.

WiiM publishes two troubleshooting workarounds. First, try inserting the trigger cable only halfway into the amplifier’s Trigger In to see whether the amplifier responds. Second, use a stereo-male-to-mono-female adapter at the WiiM Trigger Out and connect a mono cable from that adapter to the amplifier Trigger In.

For a permanent setup, DDB would favor a securely seated cable/adapter arrangement over leaving a plug partially inserted. That is a practical recommendation, not a Fosi or WiiM specification.

Best troubleshooting order

  1. In the WiiM Home app, open Devices > Device Settings > 12V Trigger and confirm the trigger status/control is working.
  2. Match the WiiM end to the correct port size: 2.5 mm for Pro/Pro Plus, 3.5 mm for Ultra.
  3. If the ZA3 does not switch, use WiiM’s half-insertion workaround as a quick diagnostic.
  4. If that changes the behavior, move to WiiM’s stereo-to-mono adapter plus mono-cable workaround for a more secure connection.
  5. If you are using a physical WiiM input, enable auto-sensing for the active input as WiiM recommends.
  6. If the ZA3 still does not respond, stop assuming a different cable brand will solve it. Recheck the trigger settings and contact Fosi/WiiM support with the exact devices and cable arrangement.

What cable should you buy?

Do not choose by the words “12V trigger cable” alone. Match the WiiM connector size first, then make sure the amplifier end physically fits the ZA3 Trigger In. If a conventional cable does not switch the ZA3, WiiM’s own support guidance points to the adapter workaround rather than simply replacing the amp.

DDB is not naming a generic trigger cable as a purchase recommendation here because no merchant listing was verified to guarantee the relevant ZA3/WiiM contact behavior.

Does this change the ZA3 buying decision?

Not much. The 12V trigger remains useful for a streamer-controlled system, but WiiM buyers should treat it as a connection that may need a small adapter/cable compatibility step rather than assume every trigger cable will be plug-and-play.

Can I swap op-amps?

Yes. Fosi publishes the ZA3 as an op-amp-rollable design and lists several compatible dual DIP8 options.

More Real-World ZA3 Questions

What kind of product is the ZA3?

It is primarily a power amplifier for passive speakers. You feed it a line-level analog signal through RCA or balanced XLR/TRS, and it supplies power to the speakers.

What does the ZA3 not have built in?

Fosi does not list Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, optical, HDMI, a DAC, a phono preamp, a headphone output, or bass/treble controls on the ZA3.

Can I connect a TV directly to the ZA3?

Only if the TV can provide a suitable analog line-level output. The ZA3 itself has no optical or HDMI input. A TV using optical or HDMI ARC would need a DAC, preamp, streamer, or other device in between that outputs RCA or balanced analog audio.

Can I connect a computer directly?

Not by USB. A computer needs an analog output or an external DAC/preamp feeding the ZA3’s RCA or balanced input.

Can I connect a phone directly?

The ZA3 has no Bluetooth. A phone would need a compatible analog dongle/DAC, streamer, preamp, or other source that produces line-level analog audio.

Will the ZA3 work with a WiiM streamer?

Yes, if the WiiM model provides a compatible analog output, or if you place a DAC between a digital output and the ZA3. The ZA3’s 12V trigger can also synchronize power with compatible source gear.

Can I leave both RCA and XLR cables connected?

The ZA3 has a front input selector, so the practical setup is to select the RCA or balanced input you want to hear rather than combine both sources.

Does the balanced input accept 1/4-inch TRS plugs?

Yes. Fosi’s current product page specifies a balanced combo input that accepts XLR or 1/4-inch TRS.

Do I need XLR cables?

No. RCA is a supported input. Balanced XLR/TRS is another option when the source provides a compatible balanced output.

Can I use banana plugs?

Yes. Fosi explicitly lists banana plugs or bare speaker wire for the speaker outputs.

Does speaker wire come in the box?

Fosi’s published package contents list the amplifier, a power adapter, and the user manual. Speaker wire and RCA/XLR cables are not listed.

Can I use 4-ohm speakers?

Yes. Fosi publishes its main power ratings at 4 ohms and lists a supported speaker range of 2 to 8 ohms.

Can I use 6-ohm speakers?

Yes. Six ohms falls within Fosi’s published 2-to-8-ohm range.

Can I use 8-ohm speakers?

Yes. Eight ohms is within the published range, although the 4-ohm wattage figures should not be assumed to apply unchanged at 8 ohms.

Can I use 2-ohm speakers?

Fosi lists 2 ohms as the bottom of the supported range. In mono mode, the manual also specifically states a 2-ohm minimum load.

Can the ZA3 power a passive subwoofer?

No. Fosi says the subwoofer output is only for a powered subwoofer.

Can the ZA3 connect to a powered subwoofer?

Yes. The ZA3 has a dedicated active-subwoofer output.

Does the manual tell me the subwoofer crossover frequency?

The current Fosi user-instruction page identifies an active-subwoofer output but does not publish a crossover setting in its main specification section. We would not invent one from forum discussion and present it as an official spec.

Can I use the ZA3 without a subwoofer?

Yes. The ZA3 is fundamentally a stereo speaker amplifier; the subwoofer output is optional.

What does stereo mode mean?

One ZA3 drives a left and right passive speaker as a normal two-channel amplifier.

What does mono mode mean?

Mono mode turns one ZA3 into a higher-power single-channel amplifier. Fosi publishes 235W x1 at 4 ohms with the 48V/5A supply and 110W x1 with 32V/5A.

Do I need two ZA3s to use mono mode for stereo music?

Yes. A stereo pair of monoblocks uses one ZA3 for the left channel and a second ZA3 for the right channel.

Does two ZA3s in mono simply double the wattage?

No. Fosi’s own ratings show 155W per channel in stereo versus 235W for one mono channel with the 48V/5A supply.

Should I buy one ZA3 now and a second later?

That is a sensible upgrade path if one ZA3 already meets your needs in stereo. The product is designed to support either one-unit stereo operation or two-unit mono operation.

What does the 12V trigger do?

It lets compatible equipment tell the ZA3 to turn on or off with the rest of the system, so you do not have to operate the amp separately.

Does the ZA3 remember its volume after I turn it off?

Yes. Fosi’s user instruction says it has volume memory and will retain the previous shutdown volume when powered on again.

Why does Fosi tell me to turn the volume down before first power-up?

Because the amp remembers volume. Fosi specifically recommends setting the volume to minimum before the first startup to avoid an unexpectedly loud signal.

Can I connect a turntable straight to the ZA3?

Only if the turntable already has a built-in phono preamp and is set to line output. Otherwise Fosi says an external phono preamp must go between the turntable and ZA3.

Does the ZA3 contain a phono preamp?

No. Fosi explicitly says it does not.

If my turntable has PHONO and LINE settings, which should I use?

Use LINE when connecting directly to the ZA3, because the turntable’s built-in preamp must raise the signal to line level first.

Can I use a 24V power supply?

Fosi specifies a 24-to-48V DC input range, so 24V is within the stated voltage range. Fosi’s published output examples, however, are for 32V/5A and 48V/5A supplies.

Can I use a 36V power supply?

Thirty-six volts falls within the published 24-to-48V input range, but Fosi does not publish the same detailed output ratings for 36V that it does for 32V and 48V.

Why does the 48V version make more power?

Fosi’s own ratings show the difference: 155W x2 at 4 ohms with 48V/5A versus 95W x2 with 32V/5A. The higher supply voltage gives the amplifier more voltage headroom.

How much electrical power can the 32V/5A adapter provide?

Derived math: 32V x 5A = 160W maximum DC input before amplifier losses.

How much electrical power can the 48V/5A adapter provide?

Derived math: 48V x 5A = 240W maximum DC input before amplifier losses.

Why do Fosi’s ZA3 wattage numbers seem inconsistent?

Fosi’s current official material contains more than one stereo figure for the 48V version. Its user instruction says 155W x2 at 4 ohms, while another current product page lists 180W x2. We leave that discrepancy visible instead of pretending the documents agree.

Does the ZA3 come with a power supply?

Fosi’s standard package list includes a power adapter, and its store offers 32V/5A and 48V/5A bundles. Because no-power-supply variants can also exist in store listings, check the exact variant before ordering.

Can I swap the op-amps?

Yes. Fosi designed the ZA3 with replaceable op-amps and provides replacement instructions.

Are the op-amps directional?

Yes. Fosi warns that each op-amp has an orientation mark and must be aligned correctly with the marked position on the board.

Do I need to change the op-amps?

No. Op-amp rolling is an optional customization feature, not something required to use the amplifier normally.

What is the simplest complete ZA3 system?

A source with line-level analog output, one ZA3, a compatible power adapter, two passive speakers, speaker wire, and RCA or balanced interconnects. Add a powered subwoofer only if you want one.

What is the most common extra box a ZA3 buyer may still need?

It depends on the source. A turntable may need a phono preamp; a TV or computer using digital audio may need a DAC or preamp; a streaming setup may need a streamer. The ZA3 itself is deliberately focused on amplification rather than source handling.

Who probably should not buy the ZA3?

Someone looking for a one-box receiver with Bluetooth, HDMI, optical input, a DAC, headphone output, remote control, or built-in phono stage will need additional equipment or a different product.

Who is the ZA3 easiest to recommend to?

Someone who already has a suitable source or preamp and wants a compact amplifier for passive speakers, with the option to add a powered subwoofer or later expand to two ZA3 monoblocks.
