Fosi Audio BT30D Pro Data Dossier: 32V vs 48V, Passive vs Powered Subwoofers and Setup

Data Dossier: The Fosi Audio BT30D Pro is a compact 2.1-channel amplifier with Bluetooth/RCA input, stereo passive-speaker outputs, a separate passive-subwoofer output and a full-range 3.5mm pre-out. The buying challenge is that “subwoofer support” means two different signal paths, and the current product page and user-instruction page do not completely agree about allowable DC input voltage.

This is a sourced product-data page, not a listening review. Data Driven Buyer has not personally tested the BT30D Pro. Some links may be affiliate links.

Plain-English Snapshot

  • It can run passive stereo speakers plus a passive subwoofer.
  • It can also feed a powered subwoofer through PRE OUT. Those are not the same subwoofer path.
  • Fosi’s current user instruction says SUB FREQ adjusts the passive-subwoofer output.
  • Current 32V and 48V versions exist, but not every BT30D Pro should receive 48V.
  • The rear-panel DC INPUT label on the exact unit controls the safe decision.
  • A unit marked 19-36V is not compatible with 48V. A unit marked 24-48V can use 48V according to the current product page.
  • The current user-instruction page still says DC 12-36V. DDB leaves that documentation conflict visible.
  • Headline output numbers need power-supply context: 32V/5A has a 160W DC input ceiling; 48V/5A has a 240W ceiling before losses.

32V vs 48V: Check the Rear Label First

Fosi currently sells 32V/5A and 48V/5A configurations. Its product page also gives a hardware-revision rule: if the rear label says DC INPUT 19-36V, do not use 48V. If it says DC INPUT 24-48V, Fosi says 48V is supported.

The current user-instruction page still lists DC 12-36V. Because those official sources do not fully agree, the safest buying rule is simple: do not infer 48V compatibility from the model name alone.

What the Power Supply Can Actually Deliver

SupplyDerived DC input ceilingWhat it means
32V / 5A160WMaximum electrical input before amplifier losses
48V / 5A240WHigher input ceiling, but not permission to assume every unit accepts 48V

Those ceilings are arithmetic from volts x amps. They are not extra manufacturer output ratings, and they show why the headline channel-power numbers should not be read as simultaneous continuous output.

Fosi’s current product page also says active cooling such as a fan is required for stable operation when using a 48V supply.

Passive vs Powered Subwoofer

Passive subwoofer: use the dedicated amplified passive-subwoofer output. Fosi documents the SUB FREQ control for this path.

Powered subwoofer: use the 3.5mm PRE OUT to feed the subwoofer’s line-level input. Do not assume the front-panel SUB FREQ knob acts as the powered subwoofer’s crossover unless Fosi documents that behavior for the exact hardware revision.

For the focused explanation, see Does the Fosi BT30D Pro SUB FREQ Knob Control a Powered Subwoofer?

Can I Use It Without a Subwoofer?

Yes. Fosi’s user instruction says the outputs do not all have to be connected, so the BT30D Pro can be used as a 2.0-channel amplifier.

Turntable, TV and Input Notes

A turntable can feed the RCA input only when the turntable has a built-in phono preamp or an external phono preamp is placed in the signal path first. The BT30D Pro is not a digital-input amp, so buyers who need USB, optical or coaxial should look at a different setup such as the Fosi MC331 Data Dossier.

Fosi also says an active Bluetooth connection interrupts RCA input. Disconnect Bluetooth to return to RCA.

The Real FAQ: BT30D Pro Questions Buyers and Owners Actually Ask

Can I plug a 48V power supply into any BT30D Pro?

No. Check the rear-panel DC INPUT marking on the exact unit.

Why does the user instruction say 12-36V if Fosi sells a 48V version?

The current official pages do not fully agree. DDB leaves the conflict visible rather than pretending they do.

Does the 48V version need a fan?

Fosi’s current product page says active cooling such as a fan is required for stable operation with a 48V supply.

Can the headline wattage be continuous simultaneous output?

Not from a 32V/5A or 48V/5A supply. Their input ceilings are 160W and 240W respectively before losses.

Does SUB FREQ control a powered subwoofer on PRE OUT?

Do not assume so. Fosi documents SUB FREQ for the passive-subwoofer output.

More Real-World BT30D Pro Questions

Can I use the BT30D Pro as a normal 2-channel amp without any subwoofer?

Yes. Fosi explicitly says the subwoofer does not have to be connected.

Can it power a passive subwoofer directly?

Yes. The BT30D Pro has a dedicated amplified passive-subwoofer output.

Can it also work with a powered subwoofer?

Yes. Fosi lists powered-subwoofer use through its line-level output path.

Does the SUB FREQ knob control a powered subwoofer connected to PRE OUT?

Fosi’s user instruction specifically documents SUB FREQ for the passive-subwoofer output. We would not assume the same behavior for PRE OUT unless Fosi documents it for that path.

Does the bass knob affect the passive subwoofer?

Yes. Fosi’s own FAQ says the bass adjustment affects the passive-subwoofer output.

Can I connect Bluetooth and RCA at the same time?

They can both be physically connected, but once Bluetooth connects, Fosi says the RCA input is interrupted. Disconnect Bluetooth to return to RCA.

Does it support aptX or aptX Low Latency?

No. Fosi says the BT30D Pro does not support aptX, aptX HD, aptX Low Latency, or Dolby.

Can I use it with a TV?

Only if the TV or an intermediate device can provide analog RCA audio. The BT30D Pro does not have optical or HDMI input.

Can I connect a turntable directly?

Only if the turntable has a built-in phono preamp and is set to line output. Otherwise an external phono preamp is needed before the RCA input.

Will it work with 4-ohm speakers?

Yes. Fosi lists a 2-to-8-ohm terminating-impedance range and publishes its maximum power figures at 4 ohms.

Will it work with 8-ohm speakers?

Yes. Eight ohms is inside the published range, but the 4-ohm power figures should not be assumed to apply unchanged.

Can I use just one speaker?

Fosi says not every output has to be connected. A one-speaker setup is possible, although that is no longer normal stereo playback.

Why does the 48V version need a fan?

Fosi’s current product page explicitly says active cooling such as a fan is required for stable operation with a 48V power supply.

Can every BT30D Pro use 48V?

No. Check the voltage marking on the exact unit. Fosi has published different allowable DC ranges across hardware/documentation revisions, so the rear-panel label matters more than the model name alone.

What does 32V/5A mean in actual electrical input power?

Derived math: 32V x 5A = 160W maximum DC input before amplifier losses.

What does 48V/5A mean?

Derived math: 48V x 5A = 240W maximum DC input before losses.

Does that mean the advertised 165W x2 + 350W is not continuous simultaneous output?

Correct. A 160W or 240W input ceiling cannot produce 680W of continuous simultaneous speaker output. The large published figure needs to be understood as a test/maximum rating, not a simple continuous whole-system number.

What comes in the box?

Fosi lists the amplifier, Bluetooth antenna, user manual, and power adapter.

Do speaker wire and RCA cables come with it?

They are not listed in Fosi’s standard package contents, so plan on supplying the cables your system needs.

Who is the BT30D Pro easiest to recommend to?

Someone building a compact analog/Bluetooth 2.0 or 2.1 system who wants direct passive-subwoofer capability or separate subwoofer controls.

Who should probably choose something else?

Someone who needs optical, USB, HDMI, Dolby/DTS decoding, or a remote-controlled digital-input hub will probably be happier with a different type of amplifier.

Decision: Who Does the BT30D Pro Fit?

It fits buyers who want a compact analog/Bluetooth 2.0 or 2.1 system with passive stereo speakers and either a passive subwoofer or a powered subwoofer through PRE OUT. Be more cautious if you need digital inputs, assume every unit accepts 48V, or expect the amp itself to provide documented crossover control for a powered subwoofer.
