Lectron V-BOX Pro Data Dossier: 40A vs 48A, kW, Charging Time, Cable and FAQs

Data Dossier: The Lectron V-BOX Pro J1772 is a Level 2 home EV charging station that can operate at 16, 32, 40, or 48 amps. The important buying detail is that 40A is the maximum when plugged into a NEMA 14-50 outlet, while 48A requires hardwiring. That one distinction changes maximum charging power from 9.6 kW to 11.52 kW.

Derived Charging Power

Current settingPower at 240V
16A3.84 kW
32A7.68 kW
40A9.60 kW
48A11.52 kW

These are simple volts-times-amps calculations. The vehicle decides how much AC power it can actually accept, so a charger capable of 11.52 kW does not force every EV to charge at 11.52 kW.

40A Plug-In vs 48A Hardwired

Lectron explicitly limits the NEMA 14-50 configuration to 40A. To select the full 48A setting, the V-BOX Pro must be hardwired. The manual also says the charging station should only be connected to a circuit with a maximum of 60 amps branch-circuit overcurrent protection and recommends installation by a licensed, qualified electrician in accordance with applicable code.

That means the phrase “48A charger with NEMA 14-50” can be misleading if read too quickly. It is one charger that supports both installation methods, but the plug-in configuration does not deliver the full 48A.

Buyer FAQ: Questions the Spec Sheet Usually Doesn’t Answer

Why can’t I get 48 amps from the NEMA 14-50 plug?

Lectron limits plug-in operation to 40A. The 48A setting requires hardwiring.

How many kilowatts is 40 amps at 240 volts?

9.6 kW.

How many kilowatts is 48 amps at 240 volts?

11.52 kW.

How much faster is 48A than 40A?

In pure power terms, 11.52 kW is 20% more power than 9.6 kW. Actual charging-time improvement can be smaller if the vehicle cannot accept the full power for the entire session.

Can I use the V-BOX Pro with a Tesla or other NACS vehicle?

The charger itself uses a J1772 connector. Lectron says NACS/Tesla vehicles can use it with an appropriate J1772-to-NACS adapter.

Can I use an extension cord?

No. Lectron’s manual says not to use the charging station with an extension cord or AC adapter.

How far can the car be from the charger?

The charging cable is 16 feet. Real usable reach is shorter than 16 feet if the cable must route around the vehicle, wall, post, or garage clutter.

Can it be installed outdoors?

Lectron rates the main enclosure IP65 and the charging coupler IP54. Installation still has to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local electrical requirements.

Can I set it to 32A even if it can do 48A?

Yes. The published selectable levels are 16A, 32A, 40A, and 48A.

Will an 80 kWh battery charge from empty in seven hours?

At the full 11.52 kW, simple arithmetic gives about 6.94 hours. That is an idealized energy calculation, not a real-world guarantee. Charging losses and battery-management taper add time.

Does a car that only accepts 7.2 kW benefit from the 48A setting?

No. The vehicle’s onboard AC charger is another limiting factor. The EVSE can offer more current than the car chooses to draw.

Is the plug-in version weaker hardware?

No. Lectron sells one unit with both installation options. The installation method determines the maximum selectable current.

How many charging schedules can the app store?

Lectron’s current V-BOX Pro Q&A says up to seven schedules.
